Neighborhood Update: June 2014

Dear Neighbor,

Construction continues on RIC’s new Research Hospital, located at 355 East Erie Street. As you have likely noticed, the site is changing and growing on an almost daily basis! We are currently working on the fourth floor decks and the core of the building between levels six and seven. The core and decks at the parking garage levels will continue to be our primary focus over the coming month and site operations will remain similar to what you have experienced during the past month.

We also wanted to make you aware of a slight adjustment in the installation of our first exterior tower hoist (elevator). As you may recall, we anticipated the installation of our south hoist to be completed last month, however based on the sequencing of site activities, we opted to defer the installation until the end of this month. As a reminder, two hoist towers will be installed in order to facilitate the movement of manpower and supplies. Each tower, equipped with two hoist cars, will be used until permanent elevators are completed. The second hoist tower will operate on the east side of the site and will be installed at a later date still to be determined.

As has been routine, regular construction traffic will continue to be radioed in as needed, and will include the delivery of materials and ready-mix concrete to the site daily. Additionally, as the building rises during this phase of construction, you may begin to notice building lighting. The majority of lighting will be switched on in the morning and off in the evening hours with a timer to minimize the impact to the neighborhood. A portion of the lighting (i.e., stairs, etc.) is required to be on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for life safety in the event of an emergency. Additionally, the larger lights for the floors themselves will be equipped with specially designed shields, in order to further minimize any impact to the community.

Typical construction work hours will continue to be 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (at times extending to 8:00 p.m.) Monday through Saturday. As outlined in previous updates, you may notice some activity on site outside of these times. For instance, the hoists mentioned above will operate outside of regular work hours; this is primarily as employees arrive and depart their work stations each day. These electric hoists will be similar to ambient street level noise while in use. Read additional information regarding anticipated activity outside of regular work hours.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns related to the construction of RIC’s new Research Hospital, please do not hesitate to contact me at mhoffmann@ric.org or 312-238-7522.

Thank You,

Melissa Hoffmann
