RIC is the Leader in Rehabilitation and Recovery following Spinal Cord Injury

The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) is bringing new advancements to spinal cord injury treatment! The treatment options for individuals – even years post injury, is rapidly progressing.

RIC's team of researchers and clinicians are discovering new possibilities for patients through RIC’s AbilityLab™, a novel approach integrating research and clinical care with patients on a daily basis.

"Second Look" Program

Patients – even years after a spinal cord injury – are benefiting from these treatments and are doing things they previously thought impossible. Because of advancements in everything from spasticity management to new walking exoskeleton devices, RIC offers patients with spinal cord injuries an expert evaluation through its "Second Look Program".

Second Look is recommended every 18-24 months for all people with spinal cord injury.

David Chen, MDThe program was designed by RICs team of experts in spinal cord injury, lead by David Chen, MD, Medical Director, SCI Program. Dr. Chen has over 25 years of experience in treating spinal cord injuries and is one of the most renowned medical experts in his field. Dr. Chen and his team will evaluate any individual with a spinal cord injury to assess their current situation and make recommendations for next steps in treatment.

Customized Treatment Plans

A comprehensive medical evaluation is an integral component of Second Look, and it generally includes assessment and recommendations for preventing and managing secondary medical conditions and complications associated with spinal cord injury.

Once the evaluation is complete, the team will customize a treatment plan that can help the patient maximize his or her ability. RIC has customized several programs to meet the individual patient’s specific goals. Customized, cutting edge treatment options may include, but are not limited to: • RIC’s Spinal Cord Injury "Boot Camp" (an intensive program suited to each patient's needs, goals, and progress), • Inpatient, • DayRehab®, or • Outpatient Rehabilitation.
