Caring for Kids Summer Camp

About the Caring for Kids Summer Camp

Caring for Kids Summer Camp is a dynamic program for youth between the ages of 6 and 17 years who have a physical disability and are independent in their daily living skills. Summer camp offers outdoor and indoor adaptive sports and hands-on recreational activities.

The program is designed to foster a positive quality of life among youth with physical disabilities by promoting physical fitness, independence, socialization, activity, and adaptive programming resources.

Summer camp activities include but are not limited to:

  • Baseball
  • Tennis
  • Golf
  • Swimming
  • Horseback Riding
  • Kayaking
  • Cycling
  • Sailing
  • Karate
  • Yoga
  • Field Trips

When does summer camp meet?

In 2013, the first of two summer camp session will begin in July. The camp runs Monday–Friday from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.

The first two week session will be for participants ages 6-12 and the second two week session will be for participants ages 13-17.

Where does summer camp meet?

Summer camp meets at locations throughout Chicago and at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. The address is 345 E. Superior St, Chicago. Camp activities occur at locations throughout Chicago and the surrounding suburbs.

Is food provided at camp?

No. Caring for Kids Summer Camp does not provide daily camp lunches. Camp-goers are responsible for bringing a lunch with them each camp day unless notified by summer camp staff as snacks and beverages may be provided at certain programs.

Is transportation provided?

Caring for Kids is able to provide door-to-door wheelchair accessible bus transportation service to/from summer camp to participants residing within Chicago city limits. Spots for transportation are limited and are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

What are the qualifications to join the Caring for Kids Summer Camp?

There are three basic qualifications for youth to participate in the Caring for Kids Summer Camp. Youth must:

  • be between the ages of 6 and 17
  • have a physical disability – an idea of some the disabilities youth participating have had are cerebral palsy, spina bifida, amputation/limb deficiency, and traumatic brain injury.
  • and, be independent in their skills of daily living, such as feeding and toileting. If a child is not independent in these areas, it is asked that the family provide an aide or caregiver of adult age to provide direct assistance to the child. Personal care attendants are not provided by the summer camp.

Registering for the Caring for Kids Summer Camp

Registering for camp is easy! Simply follow the directions for enrolling into the Caring for Kids Program or found in the Registration panel to the right. Once enrollment into the Caring for Kids program is complete, youth will be able to register to participate in the summer camp and other Caring for Kids programs offered.
