The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago's Global Patient Services (GPS) team expertly works together with every patient. The GPS team includes experienced physicians, nurses, therapists, researchers, and other specialists for every patient and every care level.
The RIC GPS team provides the highest level of care – expertly, responsively, cost-effectively. Our expert team will:
- Provide a personal contact across all episodes and levels of care
- Help you coordinate housing and travel with trusted sources at discounted rates
- Assist with Life Care Planning to help control long-term costs
RIC's system of care and team of experts will be there for you throughout your recovery providing expert care, clinical trials, education, support groups, and sport and fitness opportunities.

Spinal cord injuries—David Chen, MD
Medical Director, Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Program
Dr. Chen is the Medical Director overseeing ExpertEval cases involving spinal cord injuries. RIC is a federally designated model center for the treatment of traumatic spinal cord injuries, treating more than 500 such patients each year, giving them the best opportunity to regain skills and return to living independently.

Dr. Ripley is the Medical Director overseeing ExpertEval cases involving brain injuries. Each year we care for more than 600 patients with traumatic brain injuries, in a federally designated model program that focuses on restoring physical, intellectual, communicative, psychosocial, and vocational skills.

Care managers help case managers and claims adjusters with every case and every care level.
Suzanne Bryant is the Business Process Manager for Global Patient Services. She has been at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) for over 5 years and was previously the Executive Assistance for the hospital’s leadership team. Suzanne coordinates the intake process for individuals inquiring about rehabilitation services and is often the first person our patients meet when seeking care at RIC. Suzanne assists patients, family members and referring healthcare professionals with their initial questions and provides seamless access to the most appropriate RIC treatment team. Suzanne’s knowledge of travel, housing, community services and RIC programs insures that your very first contact with RIC will be handled with compassion and efficiency.
Rebecca Brashler is the Director of Global Patient Services at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) and has more than 30 years of experience in Rehabilitation. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and the former Director of Care Management at RIC. Rebecca is an Assistant Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Feinberg School of Medicine. She holds a secondary appointment in the Medical Humanities and Bioethics Program and is also an adjunct faculty member at the University of Chicago's School of Social Service Administration. She provides Medical Ethics Consultations through the Donnelley Ethics Program at RIC. Ms Brashler’s clinical expertise is in the area of family functioning following catastrophic injury/illness, global health, care of military patients and workers compensation.
James Doherty is a licensed social worker as well as a certified case manager and life care planner with over thirty years of experience in the field of worker’s compensation from both the rehabilitation provider and the reinsurance perspectives. He specializes in management of catastrophic injuries including Traumatic Brain Injury, Burns, Amputations, Spinal Cord Injury and Major Multiple Trauma. Jim is particularly in tune to the long term needs of catastrophically injured workers, support for return to work efforts and family caregiver concerns.
Mary Fallon is a Registered Nurse and Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurse (CRRN). She has over 20 years of experience in Rehabilitation and was the previous Director of Admitting at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC). Mary currently manages Worker’s Compensation Services at RIC’s Center for Pain Medicine. Her expertise in this area draws on her previous proficiency in Acute Rehabilitation Injuries and has expanded to include the biological, psychological and social factors that contribute to chronic pain. As an integrated member of the pain team who focuses on workers compensation concerns and barriers to return to work, Mary is uniquely positioned and trained to coordinate the complex needs of this patient population and the concerns of their external case managers.
Nick Fonner is a licensed social worker who joined the RIC Global Patient Services team in 2012. He has close to 10 years of experience as a Rehabilitation Case Manager primarily in the private worker’s compensation industry with experience in catastrophic injuries, needs assessments, crisis counseling, growth planning, transitional living, service coordination and cost management. Nick is a former member of the USA Wheelchair Rugby Team and Manager for the Chicago Bears Wheelchair Rugby Team in Chicago.
