Title: SCIPA (Spinal Cord Injury and Physical Activity)

Abstract:  Historically, rehabilitation has been based upon adaptation to disability rather than promoting recovery in paralyzed limbs. The SCIPA (Spinal Cord Injury and Physical Activity) research program is being conducted in 7 Spinal Units across Australia and New Zealand. The program involves a series of clinical trials examining the effectiveness of very early intervention for lower limbs, task-specific training for the hand, and an intensive activity-based therapy program for the whole body. A training program for community fitness instructors is also being developed, in order to improve access to exercise opportunities by people with spinal cord injury. SCIPA has provided the opportunity for professional development of Spinal Unit staff and has engaged all the Spinal Units in collaborative research for the first time.
