Study Objective

The objective of this investigation is to develop and validate a comprehensive 3D finite element (FE) model, which will reliably simulate and predict how the buttock-thigh soft tissue behaves to externally sitting loads. The proposed

FE model will represent the sitting structure in the true joint configuration of seated postures with real geometry obtained by MRI images. Material properties will be obtained in vivo and ex vivo from human and animal tissues. It is expected this FE model will not only be a powerful tool for better understanding of the mechanical and physiological response of buttock tissue to sitting load, but will also facilitate development of improved prevention and treatment strategies to PU formation to reduce the health care cost and promote the quality of life of people with impaired mobility.
