Dance for adults with Parkinson's Disease

Objective

To compare the execution of coordinated movement patterns before and after a dance program centered in classical ballet theory and designed for adults with PD and to asses the impact on their mental status, activities and participation.

How to Participate

Inclusion criteria:

1. Subjects must be medically stable with Parkinson’s disease with a Hoehn and Yahr Stage of 1-3.
2. Subjects must be able to ambulate 150 feet or greater without requiring physical assistance. (Functional Independence Measure Locomotion Score of 5 or greater).

Exclusion criteria:

1. Significant cognitive or communication impairment as indicated by a Folstein Mini Mental Status Examination score less than 24 out of 30.
2. Presence of concurrent severe medical illness which in the opinion of the investigator will preclude participation in the study. Such illnesses may include but not limited to severe or uncontrolled cardiovascular disease, hypertension, orthostatic hypotension, pulmonary disease, diabetes, thromboemobolic disease, history of a fracture in the prior 6 months due to osteoporosis or osteopenia, or a known history of lower extremity peripheral nerve injury or neuropathy.
3. Inability to attend and participate in 75% of dance classes between each testing period.
