Neuromechanics Lab

Research in the Neuromechanics Laboratory focuses on two closely related topics: Neuromechanics and Orthopedic Biomechanics. The underlying theme of our research is to gain better understanding of how biomechanics and neurophysiology are integrated in the control of movement. The overall goal of these efforts is to develop improved intervention strategies for musculoskeletal rehabilitation.

The Neuromechanics Laboratory conducts experimental and computational studies aimed at understanding the biomechanical and neuromuscular mechanisms for maintaining knee joint stability.  Our experiments include in vitro somatotopic mapping of the neurosensory elements that are believed to mediate muscular reflexes at the knee; in vivo experiments to quantify the input-output properties of periarticular mediated reflexes in both healthy and injured subjects; and exploration of the effects of soft tissue disruption and surgical intervention on intrinsic knee joint mechanics and overall joint kinematics using a hyperelastic finite element (FE) model of the knee.
