Neural Engineering Lab

The Neural Engineering lab focuses on studying different aspects of the neuromuscular control system in humans using advanced engineering techniques. The research being done here ranges from understanding the control strategies used during basic human movements to assessing changes in reflex function in people with stroke and spinal cord injuries. The latter topic, which concentrates on discovering the fundamental mechanisms responsible for spasticity, is the primary focus of the lab. The goals of this research are directed towards developing better rehabilitation assessment techniques to evaluate spasticity.

Goals of our researchers:

  • To characterize the mechanical abnormalities (particularly spasticity) associated with neurological disorders such as stroke and spinal cord injury using advance engineering techniques,
  • To explore the etiology and time course of these abnormalities,
  • To determine the associations of these abnormalities with impaired function and disability,

To quantify the effects of specific physical therapy and pharmacological interventions on these neuromuscular abnormalities.
