Principal Research Scientist in Orthopedics

The Department of Nemours Biomedical Research and the Center for Pediatric Research located at the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Delaware invite applications for the position of Principal Research Scientist. A successful candidate will bring an established, NIH-funded basic or clinical research program that is translational in scope and focused on topics broadly related to Pediatric Orthopedics. Potential research interests may include the biology or mechanics of bone formation, bone loss and/or growth, skeletal muscle or neuromuscular junction research, cartilage biology or growth plate research, tissue engineering, and gait research. The focus should be on disorders of childhood such as cerebral palsy, skeletal dysplasias, scoliosis, arthrogryposis, muscular dystrophy, low bone mineral density, fractures and limb lengthening.

The successful candidate will interact with a strong group of clinical faculty in the Orthopedics department, which is ranked 6th in the US in Pediatric Orthopedics and is projected to soon be the second largest pediatric practice in the country. http://www.nemours.org/service/medical/orthopedics.html#tab1.

Additional clinical collaborations with other departments including genetics, rehabilitation medicine, and neurology are encouraged in areas of mutual interest. Opportunities exist to cultivate research collaborations among the Nemours' Delaware and Florida campuses that capitalize on the institution's technological infrastructure, electronic medical records, and professional staff of more than 450 health care providers. Inter-institutional partnerships are facilitated through the Delaware Health Science Alliance (http://www.delawarehsa.org/), an integrated consortium between Nemours, the University of Delaware, Thomas Jefferson University, and the Christiana Care Hospital System.

This position is supported in part through the Center for Pediatric Research, which is funded through the NIH NCRR Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) Program. As a senior faculty member in the Center for Pediatric Research, this individual will mentor junior faculty through the training programs that are a primary objective of the Center. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to mentor graduate students from the University of Delaware and clinical fellows in Orthopedics. Nemours and/or the Center for Pediatric Research support Biomolecular, Cell Science, Bioinformatics, and Histology Core laboratories that are readily accessible to the investigator. The position will be provided with dedicated bench and office space in the Center. Equipment needed for translational orthopedic research, as well as furniture, administrative/secretarial support, and a computer for business use will be provided.

The successful candidate will possess a Ph.D., M.D. or other relevant advanced degree, and have evidence of a demonstrated ability to publish in well-regarded scientific journals, raise research funds from external sources, and be highly respected in the international scientific community.
