Award and Duration

The main goals of RFA-HD 09-013 is to provide pilots funds to faculty based in universities, medical centers and hospitals across the United States. These funds will support collaborative pilot studies and joint projects focusing on the development of new techniques in nuero-engineering. These techniques are to facilitate our basic understanding of neurologic disability and to promote recovery. We plan to identify, train and nurture the development of investigators who seek to use engineering applications as a means to study neurologic disorders. SMPP pilot funding can be approximately $50,000 total costs/year and for up to two years per collaborative investigator.

In addition to being a resource for the development of technology, techniques and preliminary data, these funds may be budgeted for faculty salary; staff support; fellow or student support; travel or subject fees as needed. This opportunity is extended to investigators within and outside the Chicago area. The Committee will consider the cost of each pilot study with the expectation that Chicago based investigators will be less costly.

Eligibility

Pilot funding may be used to initiate the development of novel ideas in collaboration with SMPP’s ENR program.  Investigators are encouraged to propose studies that support the development of new technologies and techniques that promote recovery from neurologic disorders. It is expected that SMPP’s funding of pilot studies will lead to the development of future funding of research programs within the researcher’s home institution.

The development and training of underrepresented individuals in the field of neuroscience, engineering, neural engineering and rehabilitation robotics is within the spirit of the Medical Rehabilitation Research Infrastructure Award. Therefore, diverse investigators at the start of their careers in rehabilitation research or investigators from other disciplines entering the field of rehabilitation research and rehabilitation robotics are highly encouraged to apply.

Application Deadlines and Notifications

Applications will be reviewed as received.  A complete application will include the following:

  • Statement of the Collaborative Pilot Project (Please see the “Application for Pilot Project Support.”)
  • Applicant’s curriculum vitae in the NIH biosketch format (Maximum of three pages:) highlight education, work experience and publications or any specifics related to the success of the proposed fellowship or pilot project.
  • Letter from a University or Institution Official approving the collaborative facilities.
