Promoting Substance Use Assessment by Vocational Rehabilitation Agencies
Overview
Why is this study needed?
Moore and Li (1994) reported that the lifetime use of illicit drugs was considerably higher in a statewide survey of Vocational Rehabilitation Applicants.
How will this study help patients and rehabilitation stakeholders?
This proposal will modify and evaluate one of the most promising screening instruments available, the Substance Abuse Subtle Screening Inventory-3, and develop a version for use by vocational rehabilitation agencies.
What are the project objectives?
- Evaluate the psychometric properties of the Substance Abuse Vocational Rehabilitation Screener (SAVR-S)
- Evaluate various forms of administration with consumers,
- Develop a medication abuse subscale,
- Evaluate the feasibility and efficiency of (SAVR-S)
- Evaluate the accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of the (SAVR-S)
- Estimate rates of substance use disorders among VR clients,
- Disseminate the modified screening instrument and research findings to rehabilitation practitioners.
How will the project objectives be achieved?
This project is comprised of four components: (1) feasibility (aims 1-4), (2) validation (aim 5) and (3) a two-phase evaluation trial (aim 6). In the first two phases VR agencies and community rehabilitation providers will evaluate different administration protocols and collect information on the instrument, as well as collect other information to assist with cross-validation. The third phase will focus on the state VR agencies.
