Midwest Regional Spinal Cord Injury Care System Newsletter - February 2009

Project Updates:  Database and Research Projects

Database:  Patient Enrollment Update

The purpose of the Model Systems Database is to study the longitudinal course of traumatic spinal cord injury and factors that effect that course.  Individuals are tracked over time to identify and evaluate trends in injury severity, health services delivery, and treatment outcomes for persons with SCI.

We continue to enroll 85% of eligible patients into the Database.  Since October 2006, the Midwest Regional Spinal Cord Injury System of Care (Chicago , IL ) has admitted 211 patients who were eligible for participation in the National SCI Database.

Of those who were eligible, 179 people have undergone the informed consent process and are currently enrolled in the study, and fewer than 10% have refused to participate.  We are currently halfway through the second year of the project, and have enrolled 51 participants from October 2007 through April 2008.

The remaining individuals are pending enrollment.  Those pending in the month of February are still in the inpatient setting, in contact with project staff but not yet consented.  Those pending in other months reflect patients who made contact with research staff, showed interest in participating, but who were discharged before the consent form was signed.  Research staff is in contact with these pending cases, working to finalize enrollment.
