Midwest Regional Traumatic Brain Injury Model System (MRTBIMS)
The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) was designated by the National Institute of Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) as a Traumatic Brain Injury Model System (TBIMS) in 2008. RIC has been funded to work with The Midwest Regional Traumatic Brain Injury Model System (MRTBIMS) from October 1, 2008- September 30, 2012. Within that time, RIC will help the MRTBIMS with accomplishing several important objectives in support of a cross-functional center focused on providing and improving care for people with traumatic brain injury (TBI). RIC’s TBIMS is one of 16 facilities in the United States supported by a grant from the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research .
Our model system is designed to establish a coordinated system of care for people with TBI, including prehospital care, emergency care, acute care, long-term acute care, intensive rehabilitation, and community care. All of t his is provided by a team of health professionals working to maximize the social integration, health, function, employment and independent living of individuals with disabilities related to TBI.
Our research program’s mission is to improve the lives of individuals who experience traumatic brain injury and to aid their families and the community by creating and teaching about new discoveries about the natural course of recovery, rehabilitation treatment and outcomes following TBI.
