Overview of Day Rehabilitation Services

Day Rehabilitation at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) is a unique and intensive program of multiple coordinated therapies, delivered simultaneously on an outpatient basis. Both pediatric and adult patients receive the therapies they require along with emotional and peer group support they need. Each DayRehabCenter utilizes a structured, interdisciplinary approach to rehabilitation to help patients achieve their best life possible.

  • Day rehabilitation patients are medically stable but have sustained a significant loss of important life skills.
  • Patients require coordinated care and multiple intensive therapies to address their extensive rehabilitation needs. For example, a patient might require speech, occupational and cognitive therapies as well as physical therapy in the same program of treatment.
  • Each patient receives from three to six hours of intensive therapy each day, up to five days per week.
  • Patients return to their communities each evening to integrate skills learned in therapy into their daily activities and immediately start the process of resuming their lives in the community and school or work. RIC professionals serve as liaisons to support patients as they return to home, work or school.

RIC DayRehabCenters Help Patients Regain Independence

  • Team Coordination Facilities Care

At RIC DayRehabCenters, each patient has an entire team of professionals working to help them achieve their goals.

Teams may include physiatrists, physical and occupational therapists, rehabilitation nurses, speech and language pathologists, psychologists, vocational rehabilitation, counselors and case managers.

Our rehabilitation team keeps the patient's referring primary care physician informed about their progress and ensures a smooth transition back to their care when therapy is completed.

  • Group Therapy Allows Patients to Help Each Other

Patient progress is enhanced by sharing experiences with those facing similar challenges and seeing the success of those further along in rehabilitation.

Frequent patient interaction serves as a motivation at every stage of recovery.

Patients enjoy furthering relationships with friends, family, schoolmates and co-workers.

  • RIC's Unique Emphasis on Community Integration Helps Patients Achieve Their Best Life Possible

RIC's school and work re-entry program allows the day rehabilitation team to work with school personnel or employers to assure appropriate support when the patient returns to that environment. On-site school or workplace visits help the teachers or work associates prepare for the patient's return to their daily routines.
