International Guest Services
From the moment we are contacted to the day a patient leaves the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC), the Guest Services Department is devoted to helping international patients and their guests feel more comfortable during their stay in Chicago.
Prior to Arrival
Once the necessary medical information (in English) has been received, the Guest Services Coordinator will present the information to the appropriate RIC physician for review. If the physician determines that an appointment at RIC is appropriate, the guest services coordinator will:
- assist in determining the level of care that will best meet the patient's needs and goals
- help with preparing documentation to support medical necessity and to facilitate the visa approval process
- assist with locating accessible housing for the patient's family and/or guests that is close to the hospital
- arrange for interpreter services for those who do not understand or speak English
Traveling To and From Chicago 
In taking care of all of the details required to travel to and from Chicago, our Guest Services Coordinator will:
- arrange for visitors to be met at O'Hare or Midway airport with an interpreter, if needed
- coordinate transportation to and from the airport (including an accesible car, van, limousine, taxi or a medically-equipped vehicle to ensure medical stability)
- coordinate discharge arrangements, including transportation and identification of health resources within a patient's home country to ensure continuity of care
During Your Stay at RIC
To ensure that each patient feels more at home during his or her stay in Chicago, the Guest Services Coordinator will:
- communicate special cultural preferences to RIC medical and support staff
- assist with transportation for medical appointments
- provide a cultural orientation to staff, patients and their guests to provide a better understanding of differences
- arrange interpreter services for therapy and medical appointments
- act as a general resource to ensure needs are met
