Remembrances of Dr. Betts

“Shortly after I arrived at RIC almost five years ago, I was happy to find that the music played in the stairwells enticed me to take the stairs rather than the elevator whenever possible. I mentioned this to some colleagues who told me that playing music in the stairwells was Dr. Betts’ idea and that my response was exactly the one he had hoped for. I was fortunate to have an opportunity to talk about this with him during one of his visits to the cafeteria. I did not have an opportunity to work  with him, but am able to feel how no detail of patient care or staff well-being was too small for his concern.”

- Lilli  Kornblum, Clinical Manager, 3rd Floor OP Clinic

***

“When Dr. Betts came to RIC in 1963, I was Director of Speech-Language Pathology. Therefore, I have so many fond and treasured memories of Dr. Betts.

I recall the many wonderful dinners my husband, Ira and I had with Henry and Jack Armold who was Director of Orthotics and Prosthetics Research. This was before Henry had met Monika, his wonderful wife.

Another early memory I have was our marathon patient conferences we had every Thursday with Dr. Betts on all the inpatients. The Directors of PT, OT, Speech-Language Pathology, Nursing, Social Work and Psychology attended. Each patient was discussed in great detail and the importance of all the participants’ contributions was very obvious. We truly were a team at a time when that was not the usual patient care model.

Dr. Betts was truly a very special person to all of us.”

RIC Provides Childcare to Grateful Parents during School Closings

RIC staff provided child care services to grateful parents last week when Chicago Public Schools, along with many suburban school systems, cancelled classes due to the cold weather.

Employees dropped off their children in the Heyworth rooms last Wednesday and Thursday when temperatures dipped into the single digits.

Children had the opportunity to participate in a variety of fun activities – from board games and crafts to basketball and soccer – throughout the day. They also enjoyed snacks and some special  visitors.

The kids were treated to a surprise visit from Rick Lieber, PhD, RIC's SVP, Chief Scientific Officer, who provided a fun and educational session about how leg muscles work. The children also  were visited by RIC’s service dog Georgia, and participated in a medical dress up relay race.

RIC was able to provide a safe and warm environment during the extreme weather conditions.

Many thanks to our staff members who helped make it possible:

  • Diandra Entler, Child Life Specialist
  • Shanna King,  Recreation Therapist
  • Michael Wehner,  Recreation Therapist
  • Whitney Lingafelter,  Recreation Therapist
  • Jillian Beemer, Manager, Therapeutic Recreation
  • Glenn Paustian, Director,  Allied Health
  • Kathy Galvin, Director, Human Resources

Payroll Updates, Including W-2 Information

It’s W-2 season and the IRS requires employers to mail the 2014 W-2s to employees by January 31. RIC will provide employees the option to receive a hard copy in the mail or have it sent electronically.  A separate email will be generated once the W-2s are available to explain your options.

Please note that your W-2 may not match your year-to-date wages from your last pay stub in 2014. This is due to pre tax deductions (i.e. medical insurance, parking, 403(b), 401(k), etc. Your W-2 only reflects taxable wages.

New Year - 2015

The following are updates for 2015:

  • For mileage expenses incurred beginning on January 1, 2015, the business standard mileage rate is .575 cents per mile for business miles driven. Click here to access the updated form.

Commuter Flexible Spending Account Change

If you participate in our Commuter Flexible Spending Account, please be aware that this benefit will change in spring 2015. The Commuter Flexible Spending Account (FSA) will change from a one month to a two month pre-fund process, beginning with the April 2015 payroll deduction which will fund June 2015 transit/parking passes. There will be a one month ramp up period associated with this change, meaning transit/parking orders for May 2015 will not be funded by April 2015 payroll deductions. Please note that this benefit is not applicable to RIC parking facilities, which are already deducted from payroll on a pre-tax basis. For additional information and to learn how you can prepare for this change, please refer to the 2015 Commuter FSA change planning document.
