10th Floor Team Donates Hygiene Kits to Help Homeless

Each year the Inpatient 10th Floor Team chooses a charity to receive donations as a way of giving back. Historically, the team has sponsored families affected by hurricanes or has donated to brain injury-related charities.

This year, the team decided to create hygiene kits for the Night Mission, an organization that works to provide housing, health care and human connection to people who are living in poverty and homelessness in Chicago.

A team comprised of staff from Allied Health, Nursing, Care Management and physicians collaborated to contribute personal care items. They recently gathered together to create kits for donation and to celebrate the holiday season. Everyone can understand and appreciate how much better people feel after they brush their teeth. Great work 10th Floor!

Therapists Take Patients to Visit Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine

RIC therapists helped bring joy to two Mexican patients recently by taking them to Des Plaines to celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, a tradition honoring the patron saint of Mexico.

Candi Parilla and Kyle Bisping took Rueben Frescas and Jose Guadalupe Macias, who are unable to drive, to visit the shrine. It is dedicated to the Virgin Mary showing herself to Juan Diego in the village of Guadalupe in Mexico.

The therapists planned the trip in part because one of the patients is named after Guadalupe. He considers the feast day as his “second birthday.”

The shrine is the only official place of its kind outside of Mexico City, and each year tens of thousands make the pilgrimage to Des Plaines to see the shrine on her feast day and adorn it with flowers.

The patients prayed to the Guadalupe for their speedy recovery. Chicago’s new Archbishop Blase Cupich also attended the event.

Patients Learn to Navigate Public Transportation for Zoo Lights Visit

As part of a training session to help patients learn to use public transportation, Recreation Therapist Shanna King and OT Kelsey Watters recently traveled with three patients to view the lovely display of lights at the Lincoln Park Zoo.

The group took CTA buses to the zoo and back, which allowed them to practice using public transportation and learn about accessibility.

Prior to the outing, the therapists educated the patients about accessing the bus, as well as where to find routes and arrival information. The patients used Ventra cards to pay their fares, and had to navigate the bus on their own to find a seat and work on their balance needs.

In addition, the therapists gave the patients the responsibility of finding out which stop was the right one to get to the zoo, and left it to the patients to make sure everyone got off at that stop. After they arrived, the patients walked around the zoo for about an hour. They received a map at the entrance and had to decide which exhibits they wanted to see and figure out the best way to get there.

Each patient had different goals to work on, but everyone worked on route finding, ambulation endurance, and community re-entry. Everyone had a great time and enjoyed one of Chicago’s holiday traditions!
