The RIC Annual Report

A letter from RIC's President and CEO

Joanne C. Smith MDThese are times of amazing promise for rehabilitation medicine and research, and also times of increasing demand for the innovative care and service that RIC provides. These are times that inspire organizational progress, times that impel change as the result of a deep, inner compulsion to enhance human ability, to improve lives in ways previously unimaginable.

Our drive for progress on RIC's mission is evident in our steadfast commitment to explore, invent and achieve bold, new research discoveries that translate into 21st-century clinical advancements. Over the last year, our discoveries in neural science and bionic medicine have distinguished RIC on the world stage. Our drive for progress in clinical care has led to innovation in programs that anticipate future demands in such areas as Parkinson's disease, arthritis, stroke and cancer.

Our resolve for progress in the care of our nation's wounded has led to RIC's paving a new rehabilitation path for military servicemen and women returning home from Iraq. Our unique agreement with TRICARE, the healthcare insurance program for the uniformed services, allows RIC to provide world-class care to wounded warriors, many of whom are profoundly disabled with brain and other injuries unique to war in these times.

Since becoming president and chief executive officer of RIC, I have been in pursuit of our progress through work in three organizational realms: talent, culture and results. Progress on our mission has been enhanced by the noteworthy appointments of key leaders in our scientific, medical, quality and management domains. Our core values aligned with our mission give us inspiration and strong guidance on all decisions. We are implementing new systems, processes, technologies and infrastructures. We are contributing to and nurturing our strong investment portfolio as a means to invest in our growth and future. We are achieving results.

We have no small plans. We hold the fundamental ambition and confidence that RIC will continue to improve lives and serve as a resource for the world. In this, we are beholden to the people of Chicago. As we faithfully pursue our purpose at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, we ask for your investment in RIC and your continued support of our worthy progress.

Joanne C. Smith, MD
President and Chief Executive Officer
