Workers' Compensation Family and Outpatient Housing

The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago is located in the heart of Chicago, just blocks from the city’s “Magnificent Mile” and Navy Pier.  This vibrant neighborhood attracts travelers from around the world – including patients seeking state-of-the-art medical care.  Though traveling far from home for treatment can be challenging, RIC care makes it worthwhile – and our guest services make it easy.

At RIC, families are a central part of the rehabilitation team, so we make sure family members have a comfortable home-away-from-home – close to the hospital, so they can participate in treatment and then relax at the end of the day. Convenient, accessible housing is also available to patients and families participating in our outpatient and day rehabilitation programs.

Outside Housing for Inpatient Families

Families of newly injured inpatients at our flagship hospital receive up to the first 30 days of housing at no charge. Families rest comfortably in extended-stay facilities or hotels, with amenities tailored to their needs. Most housing is just a few blocks from the hospital; for those a bit farther, shuttle service is provided.

Transitional Housing in the Flagship Hospital

As inpatients near the end of their hospital stay, we involve families even more closely, giving them an opportunity to practice their care-giving skills with the support of RIC clinicians. A family member may stay with the patient in a “transitional suite,” a spacious inpatient room with an extra bed, wheelchair-accessible bathroom, and roll-in shower. Just before discharge, they may spend a night in our AccessAbility Apartment, a home-like environment where patient and caregiver can practice together the skills they’ll need for living in outpatient housing. RIC clinicians closely monitor and support patients and families as they transition from inpatient to outpatient housing.

Outside Housing for Outpatients

Patients and family members who travel to RIC for outpatient or day rehabilitation can stay in accessible housing suited to their needs: one- or two-bedroom fully furnished apartments, extended-stay facilities, or hotels – all close to the flagship hospital.  RIC offers discounted rates, and free shuttle service is provided to our Center for Pain Management and DayRehab™ locations.
