The effects of a stroke on mobility, memory and communication can vary greatly from one patient to another and the pace and progress of rehabilitation can vary, too. But for active adult patients with stroke, who are in the prime of their lives, it is important to find a care provider that specializes in stroke rehabilitation and can help them achieve the best outcomes possible.
The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago's (RIC) Prime of Life Stroke Rehabilitation program is specially designed for people with stroke whose multi-faceted and vigorous lives demand aggressive intervention. Often, these patients are younger or face greater demands, such as caring for a family, continuing a career or community involvement, engaging in an active social life and enjoying intimate relationships. Early and active participation in the program provides more than rehabilitation. It also educates them about preventing complications and second strokes. Ultimately, a patient’s work life, family life and leisure time pursuits may all be enhanced now and for years to come.

Complementary Specialized Services for Stroke Care
RIC’s inpatient stroke unit is designed exclusively for the care and comfort of stroke patients. Additionally, the extensive core team of physicians, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech-language pathologists specialize in stroke rehabilitation. - Body weight supported treadmill training
- Aggressive gait retraining with a robot-assisted treadmill called the Lokomat®
- Advanced arm therapy using knowledge gained from breakthrough robotic arm technology created by RIC research engineers
- Clinical drug therapy , including Botox™ and Baclofen pumps for spasticity management
- Neuromuscular electrical stimulation
- New treatments for aphasia, including computer assisted therapy, drug treatments such as bromocriptine to enhance recovery of language function, and cortical brain stimulation
- RIC provides rehabilitation care for a wide variety of stroke syndromes including Locked-In Syndrome, for which we have a specialized program of care.
- RIC’s admission consultants work with you every step of the way to make it as easy as possible to access RIC services and to transfer patients to Chicago, support patients and families while at RIC, and reintegrate them into the community.
