Meet Georgia, RIC's Canine Companion

Georgia is a black Labradoodle who works full-time at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago's (RIC) Therapeutic Recreation Department as a service dog. In addition to the two years of training to become a service dog, Georgia's handlers also worked with her through intensive training sessions to learn how to appropriately utilize her with RIC's patients.

As part of her work, Georgia motivates patients to meet their goals by encouraging them to use a weaker hand to pet her or throw a toy. Her sweet demeanor also motivates patients to walk farther and faster during physical therapy.

Georgia also helps patients focus on articulating their speech by giving her direct verbal commands such as sit, down and stay.
