Vestibular Rehabilitation / Balance Retraining

Patients who come to the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) with peripheral and central vestibular deficits receive vestibular rehabilitation / balance retraining.

For these patients we initially assess their ability to perceive sensory information from their environment and their ability to process that information and provide an appropriate motor response. As a part of this process we may also conduct a test using the NeuroCom® SMART Balance Master® System (opens new window).

After conducting the assessment and receiving the results, we then provide patients with a home exercise program to:

• reduce dizziness
• enhance utilization of remaining sensory systems
• substitute other senses for loss of sensory systems
• enhance muscle strength and flexibility in order to enable improved motor responses

Patients are periodically seen to assess and upgrade their home exercise program.
