Primary Care for the Disabled

The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC)  provides primary health care services for people with physical disabilities with the goal of long-term maintenance of health and fitness. Treatment promotes general health care and wellness with a focus on preventing secondary health conditions and functional losses.

Physician health examinations include:

  • Cardiovascular risk assessments
  • Cancer screenings (colorectal, prostate, lung, skin)
  • Blood chemistry analysis (cholesterol, lipids, glucose, thyroid )
  • Blood pressure testing
  • Hearing and audiometric testing (referral)
  • Vision screening for cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration (referral)
  • Immunizations (influenza, pneumonia, tetanus)
  • Lifestyle consultation that addresses exercise, nutrition, smoking cessation

The treatment team is led and coordinated by a physician with expertise in physical medicine and rehabilitation. They are supported by experts from several health disciplines, which may include:

  • Therapists: physical, occupational, massage, aqua, chiropractic, acupuncture and psychological therapy; speech and language pathologists, dietitians
  • Physician specialists: rheumatology, neurology, orthopedic and vascular surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, endocrinology, urology, cardiology, pulmonology, gastoenterology, nephrology
  • Allied health professionals: optometrists, podiatrists dentists, rehabilitation nurses, home health nurses

Services are organized to address both the overall medical and physical rehabilitation needs of people with disabilities. Clinics are accessible to individuals with physical impairments and disabilities.
