About the Caring for Kids Summer Camp

Caring for Kids Summer Camp is a dynamic program for any youth between the ages of 7-17 years who has a physical disability and is independent in their daily living skills. Summer camp offers outdoor and indoor adaptive sports and hands-on recreational activities.

The program is designed to foster a positive quality of life among youth with physical disabilities by promoting physical fitness, independence, socialization, activity, and adaptive programming resources.

Summer camp activities include but are not limited to:

  • Baseball
  • Tennis
  • Golf
  • Swimming
  • Horseback Riding
  • Kayaking
  • Cycling
  • Sailing
  • Karate
  • Yoga
  • Indoor Court Sports

When does summer camp meet?

Summer camp is divided between two, four-week sessions. The first session covers the month of July and the second session covers the month of August. Besides the scheduling of activities, there is no difference between the two sessions. 

Summer camp days are Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Where does summer camp meet?

Summer camp meets at Abbott Hall, where the RIC Sports Program and Health and Fitness Center are located. The address is 710 North Lake Shore Drive, Chicago. Camp activities occur at locations throughout Chicago and the surrounding suburbs.

Is food provided at camp?

No. Caring for Kids Summer Camp does not provide daily camp lunches. Campgoers are responsible for bringing a lunch with them each camp day unless notified by summer camp staff as snacks and beverages may be provided at certain programs.

 Is transportation provided?

Caring for Kids is able to provide door-to-door wheelchair accessible bus transportation service to/from summer camp to participants residing within Chicago city limits. Spots for transportation are limited and are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

What are the qualifications to join the Caring for Kids Summer Camp?

There are three basic qualifications for youth to participate in the Caring for Kids Summer Camp. Youth must:

  • be between the ages of 7-17
  • have a phyiscal disability - an idea of some the disabilties youth participating have had are cerebral palsy, spina bifida, amputation/limb deficiency, and traumatic brain injury.
  • and, be independent in their skills of daily living, such as feeding and toileting. If a child is not independent in these areas, it is asked that the family provide an aide or caregiver of adult age to provide direct assistance to the child. Personal care attendants are not provided by the summer camp.

Registering for the Caring for Kids Summer Camp

Registering for camp is easy! Simply follow the directions for enrolling into the Caring for Kids Program (this page will open in a separate window) or found in the Registration panel to the right. Once enrollment into the Caring for Kids program is complete, youth will be able to register to participate in the summer camp and other Caring for Kids programs offered.
