Functional Fitness

What is Functional Fitness

Fuctional Fitness is part of a continuum of care meant to build upon the skills learned in physical or occupational therapy. The Functional Fitness Program is a one-on-one exercise program aiming to further develop the physical skills to maximize "functional mobility" required by the activities of daily living such as walking, transfering, and balance.

Participants transistion into the Functional Fitness Program upon completing their physical and/or occupational therapies. An exercise physiologist customizes an exercise program to meet individual needs and goals. Exercise programs may involve mat work, strength machines, stretching ang balance, and exercise in the therapy pool.

Each Functional Fitness session is 50 minutes and is scheduled in advance.

How do I get started?

Get a referral

A physical or occupational therapist will determine if you are a candidate for the Functional Fitness Program. If you are currently enrolled in physical or occupational therapy at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, let your therapist know that you are interested in participating in Functional Fitness.

If you are not currently enrolled in physical or occupational therapy, please see your physician to obtain a prescription for physical or occupational therapy at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.

All participants must be referred to the Functional Fitness Program by their physical or occupational therapist at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.

Transition

Once you are referred to the program, your therapist will schedule "transition" appointments with an exercise physiologist. These appointments occur during a regularly scheduled therapy appointment and give you, therapist, and exercise physiologist the opportunity to mutually determine your goals for the Funtional Fitness Program.
