What Research is going on about Arthritis?
Currently there are several funded research studies involving different types of arthritis.
Development of a Practice Based Physical Activity Program:
Who is conducting the study:

What is the purpose of the study:
It is a randomized clinical trial for the National Institutes of Health (opens a new window), which is testing a program to develop an individualized plan to allow a person to increase their physical activity within their own lifestyle activities
Who is eligible?
Potential subjects must:
- Be diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis or knee osteoarthritis
- Be able to walk household distances
- Read and speak English
- Must also be under the care of an Arthritis Center participating physician, NMFF Rheumatology or General Internal Medicine or Orthopedics participating physician or Dr. Vicki Brander at the Northwestern Arthritis Institute.
What will I be required to do?
You will be required to participate for two years. Your participation will involve a series of telephone interviews on physical activity and medical services, wearing a small motion sensor around your waist for sevan days several times throughout the two years, and three 30 minute visits to the General Clinical Research Center at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Depending on whether or not you are in the control group or in the treatment group you may be asked to meet with a physical activity advocate one or more times at the General Clinical Research Center.

Lifestyle Physical Activity in Adults with Arthritis:
Who is Conducting the Study:

What is the purpose of the Study:
This study is to test the accuracy and repeatability of two questionnaires about day to day lifestyle activities and to determine if they are appropriate for people with arthritis.
Who is eligible?
Potential subjects must:
- Be a man or woman over the age of 50
- Be diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis or knee osteoarthritis
- Be able to walk household distance
- Read and speak English.
- Must also be under the care of the Arthritis Center physicians, NMFF Rheumatology or Dr. Vicki Brander at the Northwestern Arthritis Institute.
What will I be required to do?
Your participation in this study will require three study visits to the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. You will be receiving a full physical exam, blood profile, knee x-ray and if eligible, you will also receive a dexascan.
