Defining Quality Through Our Mission

In 1954, an old warehouse in Chicago was purchased and converted into a small rehabilitation center orchestrated by Dr. Paul Magnuson, a renowned orthopedic surgeon who, greatly moved by the personal tragedies of World War II, devoted his life to the ongoing care and recovery of people with disabilities. Since our humble beginning, the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) has grown to become a recognized leading provider of comprehensive rehabilitation services. We've gained this reputation because of our passion for our quality mission.

So how do we define quality? At RIC we characterize quality by how successful we are in helping people with disabilities lead the most independent and fulfilling lives possible. Based on our exceptional patient satisfaction and quality data, we know we are on the right track. In addition, the recognition we have received from external organizations validates this too. One great example is U.S. News & World Report—since 1991 the publication has ranked RIC as the "#1 Rehabilitation Hospital in America."

It is because of our quality mission that we focus our resources into four areas that also represent the cornerstones of our mission: patient care, research , professional education, advocacy & community outreach.
