Research Grants For Pain Studies Founded in Honor of RIC Researchers

January 10, 2006

CHICAGO - The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) announces that Robert G. Addison, MD, and E. Richard Blonsky, MD, were honored with research grants in their names by the Midwest Pain Society (MPS) in dedication of their years of work in pain research.

Dr. Addison founded the RIC Center for Pain Studies in 1976 and served as director through 1984. It was the first inpatient pain clinic in the Midwest and still today uses the latest tools in chronic pain research to examine quantitative and qualitative aspects of the human pain response. While at one time a clinical and research facility, it has since evolved into a 'stand-alone' research center with the cooperation of the RIC Chronic Pain Care Center, which treats patients.

Dr. Addison was also a founding member and first president of the MPS as well as president for the American Pain Society (APS). He continues to contribute to the Center's direction and growth and attend meetings around the globe.

As Addison's successor, Blonsky also acted as director of the RIC Center for Pain Studies from 1985-1993. He was also a past-president for the MPS. He currently is a professor at Northwestern University in the Department of Neurology.

'It is our hope that these grants in their (Drs. Addison and Blonsky's names continue to provide seed money to young pain professionals for a hundred years and beyond,' said Kenneth R Lofland, PhD, MPS president.

Applications for the grants in their names are meant for students, residents and fellows level members of the MPS and will be posted on the MPS Web site at www.ampainsoc.org/societies/mps by January 1, 2006, due March 1, 2006 and rewarded by April 15, 2006.

Submissions require a budget and faculty sponsor to oversee the project to completion. Winning authors will be required to present their findings at an MPS meeting within two years of beginning the project and to submit their findings to the APS meeting the following year.
