October 24, 2005

CHICAGO - The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) announces that Allen W. Heinemann, PhD, has been selected as a Fellow of The American Congress of Rehabilitation (ACRM).

This designation recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the field of rehabilitation medicine and ACRM.

Dr. Heinemann, employed at RIC since 1985, is the director of the RIC Center for Rehabilitation Outcomes Research, a rehabilitation focused research unit which measures the impact of medical rehabilitation over the long term in patients with disabilities. He is also an associate director of research at RIC, the hospital ranked "Best Rehabilitation Hospital in America" by U.S. News & World Report every year since 1991. He also serves as a professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University.

"Dr. Heinemann's contributions to the field of rehabilitation have given us benchmarks for continuing to provide the best possible quality of care," said, W. Zev Rymer, MD, PhD, Director of Research at RIC. "His research in patient outcomes has allowed us to advance the field of rehabilitation by looking at it from different lights - policy, research, and effectiveness and efficiency of practice."

Nominees must have sustained at least 5 years of contributions of national significance to the field of medical rehabilitation in the interdisciplinary field of medical rehabilitation clinical practice, research, education, or administration and the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine.

"It is an honor to be recognized by my peers for contributions to rehabilitation research," said Heinemann. "I'd encourage all physicians, allied health clinicians, researchers, residents and other trainees to consider joining ACRM - its mission certainly complements RIC's mission 'to promote rehabilitation care for people with disabilities."

Heinemann completed his doctoral degree in clinical psychology at the University of Kansas with a specialty focus in rehabilitation. He completed an internship at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and was an assistant professor in the Department of Psychology at Illinois Institute of Technology.

Active in his field, Heinemann has been a member of ACRM since 1984. He serves as past president of ACRM, and served as president in 2004-2005 and vice president from 2002-2003. He has also been a Research Policy and Legislation Committee member since 2001 and a leader in the Measurement and Evaluation Task Force.

Heinemann is also a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (Division 22) and a Diplomat in Rehabilitation Psychology (ABPP). He serves as past president of the Rehabilitation Psychology division of the American Psychological Association. He is on the editorial board of the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
