Advocate Illinois Masonic and Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago

Establishes Only Chicago Hospital to Provide the Full Spectrum of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Care

December 1, 2003

Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) announce a strategic affiliation between the two organizations that will greatly expand access to physical medicine and rehabilitation services in Illinois Masonic’s north side community. With this affiliation, Illinois Masonic will be the only acute care hospital in Chicago to offer RIC’s full continuum of physical medicine and rehabilitation services including inpatient, outpatient, day rehabilitation, physiatry and medical-surgical rehabilitation.

Illinois Masonic is the only Level I Trauma Center on Chicago’s north side, and is a leading provider of comprehensive, acute care healthcare services. RIC is the recognized leader in the country in physical medicine and rehabilitation, and provides inpatient, day rehabilitation, and outpatient care to people of all ages with conditions ranging from acute sports injuries and chronic arthritis, to complex spinal cord and traumatic brain injuries.

“Joining two of the finest healthcare providers in Chicago makes a strong statement about our commitment to providing high quality care to a broader community,” said Susan Nordstrom Lopez, chief executive of Illinois Masonic. “And expanding the scope and quality of rehabilitation services available to patients in the acute care setting through RIC – a nationally recognized leader in this healthcare specialty - can positively affect their outcome.”

At Illinois Masonic, RIC will provide physical medicine and rehabilitation services through the hospital’s medical-surgical units, as well as in a new, 22-bed acute inpatient rehabilitation unit for patients with disabling conditions who require daily physician visits, skilled nursing and intensive therapy to regain or improve their activities of daily living. The rehabilitation unit will be staffed with physiatrists from RIC – physicians who specialize in physical medicine and rehabilitation – and nurses and allied health professionals, including physical, occupational and speech and language therapists. The inpatient unit is expected to open in December, 2003.

The RIC DayRehabCenter in Chicago’s Ravenswood neighborhood, affiliated with Advocate Illinois Masonic, is now open and provides intensive rehabilitation services, including physical, occupational, and speech therapies, physician and psychological services, and vocational rehabilitation to patients who can benefit from multiple therapies to improve their function, but who do not require hospitalization. The DayRehabCenter is one of RIC’s growing network of services in the Chicago area that offer people the benefit of the intensive rehabilitation services they need while living in their own home or community. Outpatient rehabilitation will be provided at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center and at the Advocate Illinois Masonic Health Center in the Ravenswood community. A full-range of therapeutic services for various conditions from sports injuries and back problems to chronic pain and arthritis will be provided to help patients achieve their goals.

“We are thrilled to form a relationship on this scale with Illinois Masonic. Their dedication to excellence and to the communities they serve is evident, and we are delighted to be working closely with them to fulfill our mission and help people achieve the best life possible,” said Dr. Wayne M. Lerner, president and CEO of RIC.
