RIC Sets Milestone Achievement as the First and Only Specialty Hospital to Achieve 20 Consecutive #1 Rankings
CHICAGO - The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC), a global leader in comprehensive rehabilitation care and home to the nation's largest center for research in rehabilitation medicine, today announced it is the first and only specialty hospital in the nation to be ranked #1 for 20 consecutive years.
The rankings, reported in the July 27th "Best Hospitals" issue of U.S. News & World Report, are based on a survey of board-certified physiatrists (physicians who specialize in physical medicine and rehabilitation).
"We are deeply honored by this #1 ranking and the milestone of holding this position in the world for two decades. We are especially grateful to our employees, board members and to the community of Chicago for being the backbone of our RIC 's sustained leadership over this time," said Joanne C. Smith, MD, president and CEO, RIC. "But with this success, RIC will not rest. We hold a great responsibility to set a new future for patients and a new paradigm of rehabilitation care. Twenty years ago, we did not have the science or the tools that we have today and it's time to converge our care with our research in ways unlike any other organization has done," Smith said.
In December 2009, RIC acquired a parcel of land at 630 N. McClurg Court in Chicago's Streeterville neighborhood.
"In planning for our future, we are actively pioneering a new model for medical rehabilitation that embeds RIC's leading research and clinical activities right into the patient care setting with a focus on advancing patient abilityTM. We believe answers dwell in this nexus where bright minds converge around solving the patient condition, and they are as vivid as our imagination! Our new facility will enable all of this," said Smith.
