Why the Weight Watchers stumble is about tech, not just Oprah

Was it Oprah — or a botched app rollout — that caused the wrong kind of loss for Weight Watchers?

The new high-profile spokeswoman took much of the blame when the Weight Watchers (NYSE:WTW) share price took a dive after a poor fourth-quarter earnings report.

But while stock watchers focused on Oprah, customers had other complaints. Some disliked the new “Beyond the Scale” food program altogether. And many railed against flaws in the revamped app, which users rely upon to track their food intake using the company's proprietary SmartPoints system, saying it was glitchy and removed key features.

Is that any way to treat an app — especially one that users need to access multiple times a day?
