Patrick G. and Shirley Welsh Ryan have made an “epic” gift to Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago's soon-to-open AbilityLab. The gift, whose amount remains unspecified, is so large that the lab will open as the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab. The $550 million 1.2 million-square-foot facility is expected to open in March 2017.

Pat Ryan, founder and retired executive chairman of insurance firm Aon Corp., is chairman and CEO of Ryan Specialty Group, a holding company. Shirley Welsh Ryan is chair of Pathways, a nonprofit the couple founded 30-some years ago. M. Jude Reyes, board chair at RIC, also serves on Pathways' board.

RIC announced the gift from the Ryans today. Joanne Smith, RIC's CEO, called the gift “epic . . . transformative . . . historic.” It is more than $10 million, but she declined to specify a range, be it eight or nine figures.
