U.S. News & World Report Again Names the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago ‘America’s Best’

Hospital Sets Record: 23 Years in a Row as Number One

RIC Best Rehabilitation Hospital 2013-2014CHICAGO – U.S. News & World Report – the independent news organization that rates academic institutions, hospitals and other services vital to consumer health and well-being – announced today that the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) is the country’s best hospital for physical medicine and rehabilitation. This is the 23rd year in a row RIC has earned the No. 1 spot – and the first time a hospital has held top honors for this length of time.

The announcement comes on the heels of RIC’s groundbreaking ceremony for its new research hospital, The Ability Institute of RIC. The new $550 million, 1.2 million-square-foot facility is scheduled to open in late 2016. In a dramatic departure from conventional physical medicine and rehabilitation practices, the Ability Institute will integrate researchers and engineers with clinicians and patients to help translate research breakthroughs to patient care faster.

“We are pleased to be recognized by physicians and U.S. News as the world’s finest hospital for physical medicine and rehabilitation,” said President and CEO Dr. Joanne Smith. “But RIC has no intention of standing still. As we have done so often in our history, we are blazing a new trail – reinventing and reframing a model of care that did not exist until now. Most medical institutions have research facilities that are separate from hospitals. At RIC and the new Ability Institute of RIC, everyone will be in the same place, working shoulder to shoulder around each patient. This is the future of physical medicine and rehabilitation.”

Founded in 1954, RIC operates a 182-bed flagship hospital in Chicago and more than 40 rehabilitation facilities throughout the Midwest. It is the largest rehabilitation research enterprise in the world, serving patients from 50 states and more than 120 countries.
