RIC Musculoskeletal Expert Provides Advice on Spring Training

Joel Press, MDMuch like the 30 teams in Major League Baseball,  you could use some spring training to help prepare you for the “season” when most everyone’s activity level increases. Joel Press, MD, medical director of RIC’s Spine & Sports Rehabilitation centers was featured in an article in the Chicago Sun Times, explaining the importance of conditioning and preparing your body for warmer weather activity.

Press reminds readers that after being cooped up all winter, it’s easy to overdo it when the weather warms up.

"You may feel great after finishing your first six-mile run of the season. But, 24 hours later, you'll pay the price for that feeling of exhilaration if you haven't taken time to condition your body," he said. "You can't rev up the engine in your car from zero to 90 miles an hour without damaging it, so why would you try to do the same thing to your body, which is an even more complex machine?"

He suggests that you have your overall health evaluated first by your primary care physician and advises to start conditioning your body now for the types of activities you plan on doing this spring and summer.  If you’re a runner, start a walking program now and build up your endurance and strength before running.  If you’re counting down until May to plant your garden, start strengthening your back and core now to avoid pain later.
