U.S. Senator Dick Durbin Visits Recovering Soldier at RIC

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin and Dr. Joanne Smith, RIC President and CEO

U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin visited the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) on Friday, May 26, to visit recovering active duty army Srgt. Eric Edmundson, who is being treated at RIC for a brain injury sustained while in Iraq.  After his visit, Sen. Durbin conducted a press conference in support of the Military and Veterans Traumatic Brain Injury Treatment Act, the bipartisan legislation developed to improve the care of veterans and service members suffering from traumatic brain injuries (TBI).

Sen. Durbin visited with Eric and observed his hard work during a physical therapy session in which Eric sat up by himself and demonstrated great improvements in balance, strength and coordination. His goal is to walk out of RIC when he is discharged later this summer.

RIC President and CEO, Dr. Joanne C. Smith, also spoke at the press conference and reinforced RIC's ability to care for severely injured service people. "RIC stands ready and eager to serve our nation's most traumatically injured service men and women by providing the best clinical care in rehabilitation that our country has to offer," she said.
