In the July 30th issue of The New Yorker, a prominent, weekly news magazine with more than a million subscribers worldwide, RIC’s Neural Center for Bionic Medicine was featured in an in-depth article (pdf) on the new generation of prosthetics.

RIC’s “Bionic Woman,” Claudia Mitchell, is profiled as she participates in research in Dr. Todd Kuiken’s lab at RIC. The article outlines the science from her perspective as she balances her life as a college student and former U.S. Marine with regular trips to Chicago to participate in experiments with RIC’s team of researchers.

The article highlights the special commitment required by both the research team and individuals like Claudia is highlighted through an insider’s view of the day-to-day experiments necessary to advance this science. It’s this intense effort and commitment that translates into significant scientific breakthroughs for future amputees.

Additionally, Dr. Kuiken and his team are attributed for their key role in the U.S. Department of Defense’s DARPA Revolutionizing Prosthetics Program, an initiative developed to provide advanced rehabilitative technologies to U.S. soldiers returning from combat with amputations. For more information on Dr. Kuiken's lab at RIC, NECAL
