Specialty Programs and Services

The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) offers extraordinary opportunities to extraordinary nurses of every level of experience - for those who are seeking the opportunity to apply their full

range of knowledge and skills to deliver the highest quality, most advanced care to every patient; motivate, teach and support patients and their families and adeptly manage the care team.

Through its five primary inpatient programs, day rehabilitation, and outpatient programs, RIC provides a variety of opportunities for nurses to excel, learn and grow.

Inpatient Programs

Brain Injury Medicine & Rehabilitation

Comprehensive care for people with any category of acquired brain injury, including traumatic and closed head injuries, brain tumors, disease entities (such as encephalitis), and metabolic disorders that lead to brain injury.

General Rehabilitation

Patients with a full range of disabling conditions find healing and hope in our general rehabilitation program. Here we help people recover or compensate for lost skills resulting from illness, injury or chronic conditions such as organ transplant, cancer, burns, hip fractures, post-polio complications, Guillain-Barre syndrome, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's disease and more.

Orthopedic Rehabilitation

People who have recently undergone total knee or total hip replacement or other orthopedic procedures come to RIC for care, advanced therapy and education to help them get back on their feet and back into life.

Pediatrics

Our Rotary One pediatrics program is for children ranging in age from birth to 18 who are admitted for congenital conditions, seizure disorders, brain and spinal cord injuries and other neurological or musculoskeletal disorders or conditions. Though our smallest patients can pose some of the biggest challenges, their smiles, hugs and celebration of each accomplishment bring giant sized rewards.

Spinal Cord Injury Program

Physical medicine and rehabilitation provides the opportunity for people with spinal cord injuries to gain the skills, tools and outlook required for living independently and productively. RIC's program, in partnership with Northwestern University and Northwestern Memorial Hospital, has been designated a model system by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research.

Stroke Rehabilitation

Each year, hundreds of patients with disabilities caused by stroke come to RIC to regain or improve their physical, perceptual and cognitive skills and achieve the best life possible. In fact, RIC is the only Stroke Rehabilitation Research and Training Center federally designated by the prestigious National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research.

Day Rehabilitation Program

Through its DayRehabCenters, RIC created a model of care that provides patients with the best of both worlds: comprehensive, intensive therapy in a warm, supportive outpatient setting and the comforts of returning each day to home and family. Here, nurses play an important role in ensuring the continuous improvement of our patients' health, prevention of complications and providing education and training to both patients and their families.

Outpatient Program

RIC outpatient centers provide a full range of therapeutic services for a wide range of conditions - from sports injuries and back problems to chronic pain and arthritis. Outpatient rehabilitation is also appropriate for people continuing to recover from traumatic injuries or stroke, or managing congenital conditions. Nurses, physicians, therapists, plus other specialty care professionals work together or individually to help people achieve their goals.
