RIC Nursing & Allied Health Fellowships

Each year The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) trains hundreds of health professionals in skills related to physical medicine and rehabilitation from around the world. The Institute also offers exclusive fellowship opportunities for nurses and allied health professionals who are employed by RIC. Below is a list of the RIC employee fellowship opportunities for 2007.

Brown Buchanan, Donnelley, Prince, Taylor & Whirlpool

Purpose

Brown: The James Brown IV Fellowship for Social Work, Chaplaincy and Therapeutic Recreation Professionals has been developed to facilitate advanced research and training in clinical rehabilitation. If sufficient applications are not received from the three professions specified, the Fellowship will be open to other Allied Health and Nursing professionals at the Institute

Buchanan: The Buchanan Family Fellowship in Occupational Therapy has been established to promote research in Occupational Therapy procedures and methods, and to facilitate projects related to department programs.

Donnelley: The Dorothy R. Donnelley Fellowship for Allied Health and Nursing has been established in order to facilitate program development in the Allied Health and Nursing fields.

Taylor: The Geraldine S. Taylor Fellowship in Physical Therapy has been established in order to facilitate program development in the field of Physical Therapy.

Whirlpool: The Whirlpool Foundation Fellowship for Nursing has been developed to facilitate advanced training clinical rehabilitation, especially in the area of patient education.

Prince Nursing: The Prince Nursing Fellowship is designed to provide nurses an opportunity to pursue educational and renewal activities that will enhance their professional growth.  This fellowship recognizes the key role nurses play in patient care; it aims to recognize nurses' contributions by funding them to do a special project, study at other similar institutions around the world and allow attendance at continuing education programs. Applications for special projects should be submitted with the annual call for fellowships. Applications for educational funding support may be submitted throughout the year.

Eligibility

RIC employees within the RIC system of care with a minimum of one year of experience (at time of application) in the appropriate profession are eligible. Applicants must have received at least excellent overall performance ratings on their annual performance reviews. The Fellowship must demonstrate the promise of making important contributions to the field of rehabilitation.

Application

The application includes:

  • An application form, signed by the applicant's supervisor/manager
  • A letter of recommendation from the applicant's supervisor/manager
  • A curriculum vitae or resume of the applicant

Complete applications should be submitted to Sandra Young at the RIC Academy, 345 Superior, 16th Floor.

Selection

Applications will be judged by the Fellowship Review Committee on applicant’s capabilities, project feasibility, potential for advancing the field of rehabilitation and compatibility with current goals and objectives of the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.

Date

The application deadline is in June. Fellowships will be awarded by mid-July. Fellowship activities must occur between September 1 and August 31.

Budget

The Fellowship will cover the Fellows’ salary, benefits and approved Fellowship related expenses to the annual monetary limit of the Fellowship. Accrual of benefits and seniority will remain in effect. The applicant must submit a budget encompassing all Fellowship-related expenses.

The Fellowship allows flexibility as to how the Fellow uses his/her time on the project/course of study. The Fellow may propose to spend a portion of time on the project and a portion of time in clinical work, or work full-time on the project for a shorter period of time. Consideration will be given to sharing a Fellowship between two individuals interested in an interdisciplinary study.

Conditions of Fellowship

Regular updates summarizing the status and results of the project will be required. A final outcome report will be submitted within one month of project completion. The Fellow will be expected to disseminate information from their project/course of study to RIC staff and complete implementation plans within six months of project completion. The Fellow will resume a position equivalent to his/her former position following the Fellowship and must agree to remain with the Institute for at least one additional year.
